Jaspers assistant will throw to Phillies’ star at Home Run Derby

Scott Wingo will throw to Alec Bohm at Monday night's Derby

Riverdale, N.Y. — Manhattan assistant coach Scott Wingo has been selected by his former player Alec Bohm to throw to him at Monday's MLB Home Run Derby in Arlington, Texas. The Philadelphia Phillies star is one of eight contestants competing in the derby and is set to make his debut in the event.

Wingo coached Bohm in the 2016 Coastal Plain League with the Wilmington Sharks back when the latter was a freshman at Wichita State. Wingo also threw to Bohm at the league's annual home run derby that season which he ended up winning. Bohm was later selected by the Phillies with the third overall pick in the 2018 MLB Draft.

"I'm thrilled for Coach Wingo and this opportunity to live out of a once in a lifetime experience with a former player that he played a role in developing," Manhattan Baseball interim coach Steven Rosen said. "I know Coach Wingo and Alec built a strong relationship during their time in Wilmington together and I'm excited for them to try to win another derby together."

The 2025 season will mark Wingo's second season at Manhattan after serving as a volunteer assistant this past season. Last month, Wingo was promoted to lead assistant on Rosen's staff. He has been an assistant coach in college baseball since 2016 with stops at North Greenville, Jacksonville, Notre Dame, and now Manhattan.

Wingo had a prolific college career at South Carolina where he was part of two College World Series championship teams in 2010 and 2011. Wingo was named the College World Series Most Outstanding Player for the 2011 edition and was later drafted by the Dodgers in the 11th round of the 2011 MLB Draft. Wingo played a total of four seasons of professional baseball mainly in the Dodgers organization.

While at South Carolina, Wingo was roommates with current Phillies outfielder Whit Merrifield.

This season, Bohm is batting .294 with 11 home runs and 70 RBIs to go along with a .824 OPS. The first time all-star will start at third base for the National League in the July 16 All-Star Game.
