Manhattan Opens 2017 Season At Home Against Bryant

Manhattan opens its 22nd season of men's lacrosse against Bryant at Gaelic Park on Saturday, February 4 at 12:00 pm. Fans can catch all the action on the Jasper Sports Network for a nominal fee.


THE JSN

QUESTIONS ON THE QUAD
This year the JSN will be providing an inside look into the Manhattan Men's Lacrosse program with a series entitled Questions on the Quad. Take a look at the first episode with Head Coach Drew Kelleher:


FOR STARTERS

Manhattan will be aiming for its first season-opening win since besting Robert Morris 10-9 on February 22, 2008 and its first home-opening victory since defeating Lafayette 11-7 on February 23, 2013.

ALL-TIME
The Jaspers are just 3-18 in season openers but 10-11 in home openers.

EARLY START
The February 4 start date is the earliest a Manhattan squad has ever opened the season.

LUCKY NUMBER NINE
The Jaspers nine home matches in 2017 are the most in program history.


THE RETURNERS
Kelleher returns 23 letterwinners, including 10 starters, from last year's squad.

OFFENSIVELY ...
Leading the way is reigning MAAC Rookie of the Year and All-MAAC Second Team selection sophomore Parker Giarratana, who notched a team-high 31 goals and 44 points. The Sunshine State native also ranked third in the MAAC and 49th nationally with 2.07 goals per games. Senior Matt Garvey returns after registering 16 goals and a team-high 15 assists a year ago while Alex Abiog (12 goals) and Cole Johnson (11 goals) round out the double-digit returing scorers.

DEFENSIVELY
Junior Frank Merrill notched a team-best 43 ground balls a year ago.

BETWEEN THE PIPES ...
Is Michael Zingaro, who was second nationally with a MAAC-best 13.47 saves per game. The junior netminder also left the crease and scored a goal.

NEWCOMERS
Kelleher welcomes 19 newcomers to the roster this season, fueled by a 17-member recruiting class.

THE STAFF
For the second year in a row, Kelleher will be assisted by the duo of John Odierna and Andrew Hodgson.

THE OPPONENT
Bryant went 10-5 last year en route to finishing second in the Northeast Conference (NEC) before losing in the semifinals of the conference tournament.

THE SERIES
The Bulldogs captured the first-ever meeting between the teams by a 16-3 count a year ago. Darby, Garvey and Giarratana notched the three Jasper goals.

NEC ACTION
Saturday's game will be the first of our four matches against teams from the NEC.


IT'S REALLY BEEN 15 YEARS???
This season marks the 15-year anniversary of Manhattan's 2002 MAAC Championship lacrosse squad. The Jaspers rolled to a perfect 8-0 league record before besting Saint Joseph's in the first round of the MAAC Tournament and Mount St. Mary's in the Championship.

TANNER INDUCTED TO HALL OF FAME

Eugene Tanner, '05 was inducted into the Manhattan College Athletic Hall of Fame this past winter. Tanner is the Japers' all-time leader in assists (89) and points (186), while his 98 career goals are second-most all-time.Tanner also was selected to the MAAC'S 35th Anniversary Second Team this past summer.
