Final Round - Results
LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. - The Manhattan men's golf team placed seventh at the 2015 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championships at Disney's par-72 Magnolia Golf Course. The Jaspers final round 317 (+27) had them finish with a three-day total of 927 (+63), 24 strokes ahead of last place Canisius and Niagara, and nine shots behind fifth place Siena and Rider.
Sophomore Jon Keyes (Bayport, N.Y. / Bayport-Blue Point) posted the low score for Manhattan on the final day of competition, with a 77 (+5).
Junior James Edgeworth (Staten Island, N.Y. / Tottenville) carded a 78 (+6) on Day 3 and owned the best three-day total for the Jaspers, concluding the tournament with a 54-hole score of 229 (+13). His results placed him in a tie for sixteenth, individually. "I just really like playing in Florida," Edgeworth said. "The weather is nice, the greens were rolling and it just has a completely different feel than playing up North."
"Today, a lot of us ran into trouble on the back nine. As soon as we hit the turn, it rained on us for a hole or two and the wind picked up the rest of the round," Edgeworth said.
Junior Michael Giannico (Blue Point, N.Y. / Bayport-Blue Point) and freshman Johnny Schob (Huntington, N.Y. / Salisbury School) each recorded scores of 81 (+9) in the final round.
Saint Peter's finished the event with a team total of 885 (+21) to take home its second MAAC title in as many years.
Iona 894 (+30) and Fairfield 904 (+40) placed second and third, respectively, in the tournament.
"Everyone has room for improvement," Edgeworth said. "(Jon) Keyes was a welcome addition to this team down the stretch, the freshmen have a lot of talent and we're really looking forward to working with them next year."
Following the conclusion of the championships, four Manhattan golfers were named to the MAAC All-Academic Team. In order to be eligible for the distinction, student-athletes must have completed at least two semesters at their respective institutions and hold a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.2 or better on a 4.0 scale. Senior Mike Schutsky (Rumson, N.J. / Rumson-Fair Haven Regional) (communications) and juniors Edgeworth (civil engineering), Giannico (finance) and Ross Ketner (Huntington, N.Y. / St. Anthony's) (finance) were recognized for meeting the requirements.
The Jaspers will return all but one member of this year's squad in 2016.
