BETHPAGE, N.Y. - The Manhattan golf team opened the 2014 Doc Gimmler Invitational with a team score of 589 (+29) through two rounds of play at Bethpage Red Golf Course. The score breaks the previous two-round school record of 601, which was set in 2001. Despite turning in some very respectable scores in the low to mid-70s, the Jaspers find themselves in 14th place entering the final round of competition on Saturday.
Freshman Ryan Lynch carded the low score for Manhattan on Day 1, with a two-round total of 146 (+6). Lynch followed his first round 74 (+4) with a better second round of 72 (+2). The freshman has consistently posted strong numbers through the first two tournaments of his collegiate career. Felow freshman Johnny Schob finished with Manhattan's second best total on Day 1, just one stroke behind Lynch at 147 (+7). Juniors Michael Giannico and James Edgeworth have also begun their seasons with fine play, and concluded Rounds 1 and 2 tied at 148 (+8).
Manhattan's four-man team score of 289 (+9) in Round 2 set a new school record, breaking the previous mark of 296, which was set in September 2011.
Yale sits in sole possession of first place after Day 1, with a team score of 551 (-9). Army will enter Round 3 in second place, two strokes behind Yale, at 553 (-7).
The tournament wil conclude on Saturday morning with the final 18 holes scheduled to start at 7 a.m. Freshman Jonny Slater will lead the Jaspers out for the final round when he tees off at 10 a.m.
