NEW YORK - The first Friday of the New Year brought a return to competition after nearly a month for the Manhattan College track & field team, as the Jaspers resumed their indoor season at the Metro Coaches Invitational at the Armory Track & Field Center on 168th Street. Several members of the squad turned in impressive performances, led by three qualifiers for the ECAC/IC4A Championships.
The highlight of the meet for Manhattan was the women's 500 meters, where Heidy Palacios (Yonkers, N.Y.) improved her ECAC-qualifying time to a personal-best 1:14.38. She was the top collegian in the event, and finished second overall. Sarah Moore (Irvington, N.Y.) tied for second in the women's pole vault with a mark of 3.15 meters (10 feet, four inches), while teammate Lauren Bednarz (Beachwood, N.J.) cleared 3.00 m (9'10) to finish fifth. Megan Tice (Hyde Park, N.Y.) was third in the women's high jump (1.65 m, 5'5).
In the men's 500 meters, Carlos Petrovich (Yonkers, N.Y.) qualified for the IC4A Championships with a 1:04.96 clocking. Petrovich placed sixth overall in the event. Rokas Kirlys (Kamaji, Lithuania) reached the IC4A qualifying distance with a mark of 15.88 m (52'1¼), which was good enough for third place overall.
Manhattan's next two competitions will also be at the Armory, starting with a quad meet next Friday night.
