NEW YORK - Led by first-place performance from Malin Olsson (Malmo, Sweden), Heidy Palacios (Yonkers, N.Y.) and Cara Rostant (Valley Stream, N.Y.), the Manhattan College women's indoor track & field team finished 10th out of 18 schools at the Albany Great Dane Classic from the Armory Track & Field Center on 168th Street on Friday. The Manhattan men placed 13th out of 24 teams.
Olsson won the long jump competition with a leap of 6.05 meters (19 feet, 10¼ inches), just one centimeter off the school record she set on Dec. 1. Olsson has won the long jump at all four meets in which she's competed this season. Palacios bettered her ECAC-qualifying time in the 500 meters to 1:14.27, while Rostant won the 400 meters in a time of 56.96 seconds.
Palacios and Rostant also teamed up with Ashley Bowman (Elmont, N.Y.) and Jackie Hargrove (Vienna, Va.) in the 4 x 400 meter relay. The quartet finished third in a time of 3:50.48. Manhattan's final half-point on the women's side came from Megan Tice (Hyde Park, N.Y.) who tied for eight place in the high jump with a clearance of 1.60 m (5'3).
The best men's finish for the Jaspers on Friday was Tobias Lundgren's (Alta, Sweden) fourth-place effort in the 3000 meters. Lundgren posted a time of 8:24.21. Justin Chiaravelle (Danbury, Conn.) took sixth in the 60 meter hurdles, finishing in 8.39 seconds, while Brian McGovern (Yonkers, N.Y.) cleared 4.65 m (15'3) to secure sixth place in the pole vault. Mike Carroll (Nanuet, N.Y.) finished sixth in the long jump with a season-best leap of 6.70 m (21'11¾). Carroll also placed ninth in the high jump (1.96 m, 6'5).
Also picking up points for the men's team was Dan Duffy (Monroe, N.Y.), whose triple jump of 13.82 m (45'4¼) was good enough for seventh place. Colin Quirke (Los Gatos, Calif.) (16.02 m, 52'6¾) and Rokas Kirlys (Kamaji, Lithuania) (15.37 m, 50'5¼) placed seventh and eighth, respectively, in the shot put. In addition, former Manhattan star Jake Freeman, competing for the New York Athletic Club, won the weight throw with a toss of 22.62 m (74'2½).
Albany's women and Connecticut's men were the team champions. Albany collected 103 points, 11 more than second-place Pittsburgh, while Connecticut's 119.5 points easily topped the Great Dane men's 84.
This was the first team-scored meet of the season for the Jaspers, who have another next weekend. The Metropolitan Indoor Championships, one of the biggest meets of the indoor season, will take place on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 28-29. The weight throw and day one of the heptathlon will be held at Draddy Gymnasium on Friday, while the bulk of the meet will be at the Armory on Saturday.
