NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Most of the field event athletes got their first competition of the 2010-11 indoor season out of the way at Wednesday's Manhattan Opener. For the rest of the Manhattan College track & field team, the season began on Saturday at the Lidlifter Invitational from Yale University's Coxe Cage. Ten Jaspers qualified for the Metropolitan Championships, and four women also reached the ECAC standard.
The 4 x 400 meter relay team of Heidy Palacios (Yonkers, N.Y.), Ashley Bowman (Elmont, N.Y.), Jackie Hargrove (Vienna, Va.) and Cara Rostant (Valley Stream, N.Y.) posted an ECAC-qualifying time of 3:50.41 to easily win the competition. Palacios, Hargrove and Rostant each qualified for ECACs in individual events, as well. Palacios and Hargrove went 1-2 in the 500 meters, with Palacios finishing in 1:15.08 and Hargrove posting a time of 1:15.83. Rostant won the 400 meters in 56.44 seconds.
In the 200 meters, Bowman placed second in a time of 25.20 seconds to qualify for Mets. Malin Olsson (Malmo, Sweden), who set a school record in the long jump on Wednesday, qualified for Mets in two more events on Saturday. She finished fourth in the 200 (26.27) and also qualified in the 60 meters, where she posted a fifth-place time of 8.08 seconds. Also reaching the Met standard was Maria Jangsten (Gothenburg, Sweden), who won the mile in 5:08.45.
Melissa Yap (Orchard Park, N.Y.), who had already qualified for Mets, jumped 3.40 meters (11'1¾) to win the women's pole vault. Manhattan's 4 x 800 meter relay squad of Christine Cristobal (Dix Hills, N.Y.), Emmy Koskinen (Sotertalje, Sweden), Elizabeth Rosenberger (Ramsey, N.J.) and Jangsten also picked up the victory, finishing in 9:48.24.
On the men's side, Tobias Lundgren (Alta, Sweden) won the 5000 meters by more than a minute and a half, breaking the 15-minute barrier (14:59.67) to easily qualify for Mets. Also qualifying for Mets were Kevin D'Emic (Rockaway Point, N.Y.), who finished second in the mile (4:22.87), and Carlos Petrovich (Yonkers, N.Y.) with a third-place finish in the 500 meters (1:06.26). Justin Chiaravelle (Danbury, Conn.) was also victorious on Saturday, capturing the 60 meter hurdles in a time of 8.40 seconds.
Manhattan returns to action at the Princeton Invitational next Saturday.
