RIVERDALE, N.Y. - In her first competition as a member of the Manhattan College track & field team, Malin Olsson (Malmo, Sweden) wasted little time etching her name into the program's record book. On her final jump of the day, Olsson broke the school record in the women's long jump, leaping 6.06 meters (19 feet, 10¾ inches) to easily qualify for the Metropolitan and ECAC Championships. Olsson's jump, which was also an NCAA "B" qualifier, was the highlight of the season-opening Manhattan College Opener at Draddy Gymnasium on Wednesday.
Olsson's jump bettered the old mark of 6.04 set last year by Malin Marmbrandt, who was also in the competition. Competing unattached, Marmbrandt also reached the six-meter mark, jumping 6.00 m (19'8¼).
In the women's pole vault, Melissa Yap (Orchard Park, N.Y.), Lauren Bednarz (Beachwood, N.J.) and Sarah Moore (Irvington, N.Y.) all achieved Met qualifying marks. Yap won the competition with a jump of 3.34 m (10'11½), while Bednarz cleared 3.04 m (9'11¾) and Moore jumped 2.89 m (9'5¾). Moore also won the triple jump, leaping 10.33 m (33'10¾).
On the men's side, Mike Carroll (Nanuet, N.Y.) cleared 1.94 m (6'6¼) to win the high jump, and he also finished second in the long jump with a leap of 6.50 m (21'4). Also qualifying for Mets in the high jump was Felix Siljeback-Larsen (Vasteras, Sweden) (1.88 m, 6'2). Anthony Vega (Patchogue, N.Y.) easily qualified for Mets and just missed the IC4A standard in the 55 meter dash, running a time of 6.40 seconds, while Justin Chiaravelle (Danbury, Conn.) ran the 55 meter hurdles in 7.70 seconds to qualify for Mets.
Roman Ewald (Olching, Germany) achieved the Met qualifying standard in both the shot put and weight throw. He won the shot put competition with a throw of 15.18 m (49'9¾) and finished second in the weight throw (16.03 m, 52'7¼). Manhattan alum Jake Freeman won the weight throw with a mark of 21.87 m (71'9).
Also qualifying for Mets from the men's team were Rokas Kirlys (Kamaji, Lithuania) in the shot put (15.01 m, 49'3) and Matthew Waldron (Lyndhurst, N.J.) in the pole vault (4.10, 13'5¼).
For the remainder of the squad, the indoor season gets underway at the Yale Lidlifter Invitational on Saturday.
