RIVERDALE, N.Y. -  The Manhattan women's soccer team had trouble finding the back of the net on Sunday as the Lady Jaspers fell to Conference USA rival Marshall (3-0) 2-0 at the Duquesne Classic in Pittsburgh, Pa. After a three goal effort in its victory Friday night over Robert Morris, Manhattan (1-1) bombarded the Thundering Herd with a game-high 10 shots, but goalkeeper Liz Orton made seven stops to secure the shutout.

"Although this is a disappointing result, overall it was a good performance of our entire group," explained Lady Jaspers' head coach Sean Driscoll.

Sophomore forward Angela DeSumma gave Marshall its first goal of the contest in the ninth minute, which proved to be the game winning score. DeSumma blasted the goal from 20 yards out, slipping it by Manhattan starting goalkeeper Kara Davis. Then in the 86th minute, forward Megan Tabler posted an insurance goal for the Thundering Herd to extend the advantaged to 2-0. Tabler squeaked a shot past goalie Caitlin Trupiano from just inside the 10 yard line. Trupiano split halves with Davis patrolling the pipes.

The Lady Jaspers defense limited Marshall to just six shots in the match and allowed only three on goal. The Thundering Herd did not attempt a corner kick in the game.

"Defensively we played much better than on Friday, although the score does not reflect this," Driscoll stated. "Marshall capitalized on two nice scoring opportunities."

Lady Jaspers senior co-captain Courtney McMahon and sophomore back Devon Lutz led the way with two shots on goal. Fellow starters Amanda Fischer, Caroline Morse and Marissa Greco also placed a shot on goal.

Manhattan returns to Riverdale for its home opener on Friday night under the lights at Gaelic Park against Holy Cross. Kick off is slated for 7 p.m.
