West Haven, CT (March 5, 2005)- Paced by six fourth-quarter goals, Manhattan captured its first victory of the season, a 14-7 triumph over Hartford this afternoon at West Haven High School. Senior Jusin Otto and sophomore
Brian Murray led the Jaspers' attack with three goals each, while senior
Eugene Tanner and sophomores
Jeremy Marrano and
Chris Oppito each had three points.
The Jaspers (1-1) opened the scoring with two goals midway through the first quarter, first on a tally from Tanner, and then freshman
Kevin Dorsey found the back of the net for his first collegiate goal.
Hartford responded by scoring two quick goals midway through the second quarter to tie the game at two. However, Manhattan scored just over a minute later, as junior
Nick Crowley scored his first goal of the season. Oppito then scored his first goal of the day, with just 26 seconds left in the half, giving the Jaspers a 5-3 advantage heading into intermission.
Manhattan then outscored Hartford 4-1 in the third quarter, punctuated by junior
Greg Lewis' lone goal of the day, with 2:28 remaining in the quarter. After Hartford closed to within 10-7 with 4:42 left in the game, the Jaspers scored four unanswered goals in the next three minutes to put the game away and seal their first victory of the season.
Manhattan outshot Hartford 41-26, while sophomore goaltender
Justin Henry made 11 saves to record his first victory in a Manhattan uniform.
The Jaspers will return to action on Wednesday, March 9, when they will travel to New Brunswick, NJ to face Rutgers. Game time is 3:00 p.m.
