Riverdale, NY (May 9, 2004)- Kiera Fox plated Jennifer McCracken on a fielder's choice with the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh to post a 2-1 win on the second game of today's MAAC double header at Gaelic Park. Iona's Kate Giella gave the Gaels a 2-1 10-inning win in the first game with a RBI single. Manhattan now stands at 16-31 overall and 9-7 in MAAC play.
In the second game, Iona got on the board in the top of the first, plating a run on a RBI single by Liz Hammel, plating Alex Sprague. The score remained 1-0 Iona going into the bottom of the sixth, before Manhattan manufactured a run to tie the score at 1-1. Christina Buyea led off the inning with a single up the middle and was replaced by Elizabeth Strein, who pinch ran. Erika Kostik sacrificed Strein to second, before Megan Jurkowski plated her with a single to left.
In the seventh, the Lady Jaspers loaded the bases with one out, and after Kerry Cook was thrown out at home on a fielder's choice, Fox delivered the winning run, scoring McCracken.
Jillian Medea (11-17) went the distance, scattering six hits while allowing just one run. Alison Higgs (22-9) allowed one earned run in the loss.
In the first game, the Gaels took a 1-0 lead in the top of the sixth on a solo homer by Liz Hammel. The Lady Jaspers knotted the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the seventh. Fox led off the inning with a single, and after an out, stole second, before being plated by Michelle Gutierrez with a RBI single to right center.
The score remained tied at 1-1 until the top of the tenth, when Giella plated Sprague to give the Gaels the 2-1 lead and the win.
Higgs went all 10 innings for Iona, scattering eight hits and striking out six. Medea struck out 10 in 10 innings of work and did not issue a walk.
Today's games concluded the regular season for Manhattan. The Lady Jaspers await the results of today's other MAAC games to determine whether they qualify for the MAAC Championship.
